May 28, 2024

Agartala (Tripura) [India], May 28 : Heavy and persisting rain has caused significant destruction in Tripura's Baishgharia area, causing the wall collapse of a cemetery, severely damaging a neighbouring house and resulting in the death of livestock under the jurisdiction of the Teliamura Police Station.
According to local sources, the incident occurred around 6:30 PM on Monday during a downpour. The boundary wall of the cemetery crashed into the house of Prabir Das, situated about eight to ten feet away from the wall. The impact damaged the house's walls and led to the immediate death of a cow housed in an adjacent shed.
Prabir Das alleged that the boundary wall's construction was substandard and poorly planned, leading to this unfortunate incident. Despite the gravity of the situation, only local officials, including the tehsildar and village head, inspected the damaged property. Nevertheless, no senior officials have visited the site yet.
The affected residents and local community members are demanding proper compensation from the authorities. They emphasise the need for a thorough investigation into the quality and planning of the boundary wall's construction to prevent future occurrences.
In a related incident, a portion of the side wall at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital also collapsed due to the rain, causing widespread concern among the public.
Additionally, significant damage was reported at a madrasa in Baishgharia, further highlighting the severe impact of the recent weather.
The community urged the administration to take immediate and appropriate action to address these issues and ensure the safety and well-being of all affected residents.
Meanwhile, one person was killed and 17 people sustained injuries in Assam due to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds after Cyclone Remal in several parts of the state, officials said on Tuesday.
The severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' has weakened since making landfall last night and is expected to downgrade into a deep depression by the evening, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) announced on Monday.
