New Delhi [India], August 26 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh lauded the central government's decision to form five new districts in Ladakh as a "historic and path-breaking" step.
Chugh, who is also the party in charge of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard.

"On behalf of the people of Ladakh, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister, Amit Shah for their visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the development of this region. The announcement of the creation of five new districts: Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, marks a significant milestone in our journey towards better governance and prosperity," Chugh said on Monday.
Chugh said that this decision reflects the government's dedication to bringing services and opportunities closer to the people of Ladakh. He further said that this move would enhance administrative efficiency, improve infrastructure and provide greater access to essential services for all residents.
"By establishing these new districts, the Modi government has ensured that the benefits of development reach every corner of this beautiful Ladakh region," Chugh said.
Chugh said the BJP was confident that this step would pave the way for a brighter future for Ladakh, fostering economic growth, social development and cultural preservation. The creation of these districts will not only strengthen local governance but also empower local communities to actively participate in the decision-making processes, he added.
He emphasised that this initiative aligns with the government's broader vision of regional development and inclusivity, as seen in other recent projects across the country. The establishment of these districts is a testament to the government's commitment to balanced regional growth and the upliftment of all communities, Chugh said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) earlier announced the creation of five new districts in Ladakh and simultaneously instructed the Union Territory (UT) administration to establish a committee for evaluating various aspects related to the new districts to ensure that all details are carefully reviewed and addressed.
The committee will evaluate various aspects related to these new districts--Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang--such as headquarters, boundaries, structure, creation of posts, and any other aspect related to the formation of the districts and submit its report within three months.
Ladakh currently has only two districts, Leh and Kargil, both managed by its autonomous district council. The creation of the new districts will raise the total number of districts in Ladakh to seven.
Before 2019, Ladakh was a part of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.
In August 2019, the BJP-led government removed the state's special status and divided it into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Ladakh was bifurcated from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir when the Centre revoked Article 370 in August 2019.
This special status change led to the formation of two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
