40-day-long harsh Winter period ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ begins in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar (J&K), December 21 (ANI): The harsh 40-day winter phase, recognised as 'Chilla-i-Kalan,' has commenced in the Kashmir Valley, beginning December 21 and will continue till January 31. Srinagar has recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.3 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg have reported temperatures of minus 5.8 Celsius and minus 3.0 degrees Celsius, respectively. This challenging winter period is a distinctive feature of the local climate, characterised by plunging temperatures, biting winds, and the prospect of snowfall. The local residents have diligently made arrangements to navigate through this demanding period. The initiation serves as an acknowledgment of the resilience ingrained in the valley’s inhabitants as they prepare to confront the formidable challenges of winter.
