Rajamundhry (AP) December 10 (ANI): Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia laid the foundation stone for the new terminal building at the Rajahmundry Airport, on December 10. Speaking to ANI, the Minister said "Today is, a historic day for Rajahmundry. Prime Minister's vision is to take development to the grassroots of India to bring the periphery into the mainstream... This new terminal building for which we have laid the foundation stone will be 4 times the size of the current terminal building.” The terminal building will come up at an investment of Rs 350 crore. Andhra Pradesh’s Rajahmundry Airport is connected to three cities Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, and handles 126 flights per week. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India Sanjeev Kumar briefed about the airport facilities and area, he said “The new terminal building would be spread over 17,000 square meters. So a 4,000 square meters old building, which is now, would become a 21,000 square meter building. It will be able to cater 8 to 10 flights per hour. It will have a capacity of 2,000 passengers in the peak hour. That means 8 to 10 flights can operate every hour, and it will be constructed at the cost of Rs 350 cr. It will have 30 check encounters, 8 security lanes with the XBIS machines, and 3 aerobridges.” Considering the rapid growth of passenger traffic and saturation of the existing terminal building at the airport, the plans are to expand the facility by an additional 17,029 sqm of space.
