Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 5 : TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said on Thursday that President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should look into the crimes against women happening across the country.
The TMC leader further claimed that on average 90 such cases take place in the country everyday.
"A minimum of 90 brutal crimes against women are happening on average, daily. The union HM and the president must look into it," Ghosh told reporters.
His comments come amid the nationwide outrage against the murder and rape of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Ghosh said that CBI has not given any breakthrough update of its investigation into the murder-rape case.
"The investigation is on, but only one arrest has been made, and that by Kolkata police. The CBI has not given any breakthrough update to us," he said.
"An allegation is being raised that a police officer on duty offered money to the victim's family. A video has also surfaced in which the family is saying that nothing like this has happened, these are baseless.
"I don't want to comment on that; I am with the family. I have just one point, there are two videos When CBI has taken their statement, was this gross allegation there in their statement or not?" he added.
Meanwhile, BJP West Bengal General Secretary Locket Chatterjee demanded a probe against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as she alleged that the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata was an "organised crime."
Speaking to ANI on Thursday, the BJP leader said, "Earlier we have seen that Kolkata police were sending summons to the people saying that they were spreading fake news. Now, we can see that Kolkata police itself is spreading fake news."
"The CM should be enquired first to get to the truth. It was an organised crime. Sandip Ghosh has big names with him; even Kalighat is linked with it. Why did the TMC government send 21 advocates to the Supreme Court?," she added.
Earlier, BJP national spokesperson Amit Malviya cited a letter dated August 10 allegedly signed by former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, ordering renovation of the incident site a day after the trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
Malviya dubbed it "explosive," as he alleged that the West Bengal government and the hospital lied regarding the date of renovation.
The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9. The incident sparked nationwide protests. A civic volunteer was arrested shortly after. The CBI also arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct at the medical establishment.
