Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 25 : Following the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in the Dhing area of Assam, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi stated that the "Assam government must take responsibility because women are not safe today."
Speaking to ANI on Sunday, the Congress MP from Jorhat expressed that society "is angry and agitated because of the crime that occurred against a minor girl in Nagaon."
He also urged hospital staff and doctors to ensure the girl receives proper treatment for her injuries.
"In this difficult time, we stand with her family, and the people of Nagaon demand the harshest punishment for the criminals involved. These criminals have died due to various reasons. We are witnessing such incidents repeatedly in Assam, and I believe that somewhere, the Assam government must take responsibility for this because women are not safe today," he added.
Gogoi further criticised the state of law and order in Assam, stating that it "has become completely weak."
Earlier today, security personnel were deployed in Nagaon to maintain law and order in the area.
Meanwhile, locals in the Dhing area have staged an indefinite hunger strike in protest against the alleged gang rape incident.
On Saturday morning, the body of the prime accused in the case, Tafazul Islam, was recovered from a pond by the police after he allegedly escaped from custody and drowned.
Earlier, on August 22, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in Assam's Nagaon district, leading to the arrest of two individuals, according to the police. The incident reportedly occurred while the girl was returning home from tuition in the Dhing area.
Locals found the girl in a semi-conscious state by the roadside and immediately admitted her to a hospital.
Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, told ANI over the phone, "Police have picked up two persons for interrogation in connection with the incident."
This incident comes amid nationwide outrage over the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 in Kolkata.
