May 09, 2024
Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 9 : Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party wants to weaken democracy because they only want power, adding that the ruling party only wants their businessmen friends to flourish in the country.
Addressing a public meeting in Raebareli, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Now, BJP leaders are saying that they will change the Constitution if they come to power. They will weaken your rights because this Constitution gave you voting rights, reservation rights, education rights, and the right to speak and protest, this is democracy. They want to weaken this democracy because they only want power. They only want their businessmen friends to move ahead. They have sold all the assets of India to these businessmen's friends."
Former Union Minister and BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde said that his party needs a total of 400 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls if any changes are to be made in the Constitution.
Hegde called for the re-writing of the Constitution, stating that Congress earlier made changes to the Constitution to oppress Hindu society and to undo that "act" that his party needs a two-thirds majority in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as well as in states.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra further targeted the BJP, saying that it has become the world's richest party in a mere 10 years, whereas "Congress, which ruled the country for 55 years, did not become one".
"BJP's policy is to collect donations from everywhere. The BJP become the world's richest party. In a mere 10 years, the BJP became the richest party in the world. In all these years, we have been doing service to our nation but BJP workers are taking money for the work," he said.
Raebareli constituency goes to the polls on May 20. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi won the constituency, bagging 534,918 votes. Her closest rival, Dinesh Pratap Singh, put up a formidable challenge, gathering 367,740 votes.
Before Sonia, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had won Raebareli thrice. The constituency also elected Indira's husband and Congress leader Feroze Gandhi twice, in 1952 and 1957.
Rahul Gandhi is a sitting MP in Kerala's Wayanad, where he is seeking a fresh term alongside Raebareli. Rahul represented Amethi from 2004 until 2019. He will face Congress defector and three-time MLC Dinesh Pratap Singh in Raebareli.
