Siliguri (West Bengal) [India], September 2: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Monday clashed with police as they 'gheraoed' District Magistrate's (DMs) office in Cooch Behar over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder.
Earlier today, in Siliguri, BJP workers staged protests outside the SDO Office demanding justice for the victim of the RG Kar case and calling for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
A BJP protester, while speaking to ANI, said they will also protest at every block office in Bengal on September 4.
A protesting BJP worker told ANI, "After the Chief Minister came to power, there is no security for women in West Bengal. We are demanding justice for RG Kar and the resignation of the Chief Minister for this reason. We will protest at every block office in Bengal on August 4, and we will conduct a chakka jam (roadblock) from 12 pm to 2 pm on August 6."
In Kolkata, junior doctors protested, demanding the immediate resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal in connection with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case.
In Alipurduar, Kolkata, BJP workers protested against the incident, leading to the police using water cannons to disperse the crowd.
In Kolkata's Alipore area, BJP workers protested outside the DM office, demanding action over the rape and murder case.
These protests come amid widespread outrage over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The trainee was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9.
Doctors have been holding protests in different states demanding justice for the victim and enhanced security laws for healthcare professionals.
The incident has triggered a war of words between the BJP, with the latter demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation from the local police following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
