Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) [India], December 8 : Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Awadhesh Prasad on Sunday criticized the BJP government over its handling of farmers' issues, accusing it of being "anti-farmers."
Prasad stressed that the country's well-being is linked to the prosperity of its farmers and expressed concern over the lack of support to those affected by pests and stray animals.
Speaking on the plight of farmers, Prasad said, "The BJP's double engine government is against farmers. Until farmers are happy, this country cannot be happy. Our party had raised questions about the government's policies to help farmers deal with pests and animals."
"I had even given a notice listing 52 people who should receive compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for losing their farms to pests. It's shameful that under Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath's leadership, hundreds of cows die daily," he added.
Earlier, a group of farmer resumed their 'Dilli Chalo' protest march from the Haryana-Punjab Shambhu border on Sunday afternoon, to press for their demands, including a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Police deployed tear gas at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border to disperse farmers. A verbal altercation ensued between the police and the protesting farmers, with drone footage showing police blocking the farmers at the border.
According to Haryana Police, the group of farmers moving forward did not match the list of 101 farmers scheduled to participate in the march.
"We will first identify them (farmers) and then allow them to proceed. We have a list of the names of 101 farmers, and these are not the same people. They are not letting us identify them and are moving ahead as a mob," said a Haryana Police official deployed at the site.
Police stated that the farmers did not have permission to move towards Delhi.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said that they have decided to withdraw the 'Jattha' of 101 farmers. "The agitation will continue today. One farmer has been admitted to PGI and is in serious condition and 8-9 farmers are injured, so we have withdrawn the 'jatha'. After the meeting, we will tell you about the future program..." he said.
