Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 12 : Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday targeted the West Bengal government for cancelling the State Student Youth Festival 2023-24 and called it a "bankrupt" government.
The West Bengal Government earlier released a statement informing about the cancellations of the State Student Youth Festival 2023-24.
"This is to inform that the Youth Festival 2023-24 in the districts scheduled to be held from January 10 to 12 has been cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances," the statement said.
Referring to this, the BJP leader posted on X, "Bankrupt West Bengal Government cancels State Student Youth Festival 2023-24. The youth festival, which was being held to commemorate the birth anniversary of youth icon Swami Vivekananda, had been organised by the state government for the last few years. It had been a platform for young talents to showcase their skills in various artistic and intellectual domains. This sudden and unexpected cancellation comes as a disappointment to both the participants and the organisers."
Hitting out at the state government, Adhikari said that they have 'misplaced priorities'.
"This government has misplaced priorities. They have reneged on their commitment to promote a vibrant cultural and educational atmosphere, which such events foster. Instead, they are focused on generating revenues through liquor sales, producing country liquor and making it available to people at cheap prices," the BJP leader wrote on X.
"Cultural events are instrumental in paving the path for the holistic development of students, as they provide opportunities for the youth to explore their creative potential, which complements the traditional academic methods. The WB government has betrayed the morale and enthusiasm of the youth," he added.
