Ludhiana (Punjab) [India], April 5 : As a controversy erupted after the picture of jailed chief minister Arvind Kejriwal placed between Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar went viral during a video briefing of Sunita Kejriwal, Jagmohan Singh, the nephew of Bhagat Singh said that the 'biggest threat to ideals of the freedom fighters is the present government at the Centre'.
Speaking to ANI, Jagmohan Singh alleged that democracy is under 'threat' due to the present government.
"If he (Arvind Kejriwal) puts his photo with them (BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh), the people will ask him about what he did to take forward their ideals, but I believe that the biggest attack on their ideals is being done by the present government. They want to remove opposition by dividing the people based on several things," Jagmohan Singh said.
He further said that the way the current government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is running reminds him of British rule.
"This is the time that reminds us for which type of India, we fought. The visions of BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh were very clear. But currently, there is danger over democracy. If you try to remove the whole opposition from the battleground, it is a horrifying situation for democracy. The situation prevailing in the country reminds me of British rule as the government is doing the same by sending the opposition behind the bar without any rule. and whoever will fight against it, I will salute him/her," he added.
In a video message from Arvind Kejriwal's wife, Sunita, a picture of Arvind Kejriwal was seen hanging on the wall, placed between the photos of Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar. This was the first time when the picture of Arvind Kejriwal was seen on the wall.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a swipe at the AAP for equating Arvind Kejriwal with Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar and said that the public will not be misled by Kejriwal's party.
Bhagat Singh's nephew, however, said, "It does not make any difference to me, who takes photos with whom. My only concerns are to take forward the values of the fundamental rights."
After facing backlash from the ruling party, Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi has said that Kejriwal is the symbol of the struggle going on today against the dictatorship of BJP and his picture is proof of this.
"Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested by the central government of Bharatiya Janata Party on false charges. Arvind Kejriwal is the symbol of the struggle going on today against the dictatorship of the BJP, and his picture is proof of this. This is to remind us that the struggle that is going on today against the BJP is no less than a freedom struggle. There was a time when the people of the country used to fight against the British. Today is a time when we have to struggle against the dictatorship of BJP and Arvind Kejriwal is doing the same," Atishi said.
AAP leader Sanjay Singh who walked out of Tihar jail after nearly 6 months, following the Supreme Court's (SC's) decision to grant him bail in the Delhi excise policy case also said said that every citizen of the country has the right to have a photograph with great men of the nation.
AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, "Can't I put my photo with the great men of the country? People take selfies with the statue of Bhagat Singh. Even in election campaigns, politicians post photos. What is the question in this? Arvind Kejriwal is the head of our party. Every citizen has the right to have a photograph taken with great men. We are trying to follow in his footsteps."
