New Delhi [India], April 25 : In the heartland of Punjab, where political tensions simmered and rivalries ran deep, the Central government has provided security cover to three influencing leaders in the state namely Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, Karamjjit Kaur Chaudhary, and Tajinder Singh Bittu, sources said.
The three leaders have been provided 'Y' category Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) security cover only in Punjab.
The security cover was provided to the three leaders following an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) based on the Intelligence Bureau's recent threat analysis report.
The MHA's move comes after the Congress on Wednesday suspended Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities. Vikramjit, who had been lobbying for the ticket, had also resigned from the party's chief whip in Punjab Vidhan Sabha last week.
Miffed over being sidelined, Vikramjit's mother Karamjjit Kaur Chaudhary, who had unsuccessfully contested from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat last year, snapped ties with Congress and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 20. She has also been granted the 'Y' category security cover of CRPF in Punjab.
Bittu is the third influencing leader of Punjab who has been accorded 'Y' category security cover by CRPF. The leader resigned from his post as AlI India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary-in-Charge of Himachal Pradesh and primary membership Congress party last week.
Subsequently, Bittu joined the BJP at the party headquarters in Delhi on April 20 in the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and party general secretary Vinod Tawde.
