"Could have retired out him little early": Jaffer on CSK's decision over Conway

New Delhi [India] April 9 : Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer expressed his views on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) decision to retire out opener Devon Conway during the clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday.
Jaffer feels CSK could have retired out Conway earlier in the match to ensure they have more time to chase the target, as they needed a batter who could score quickly.
"You could have retired him, and you could have retired him a little early. But, again, Jadeja was the only one [left]. I don't think they would have trusted [Vijay Shankar]... you needed one more batter there who could have done that [score quickly]. But, unfortunately, they didn't have anybody. Even Jadeja for that matter, he has his restrictions [in terms of how fast he can score]." Wasim Jaffer said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Devon Conway retired out in the 19th over when CSK needed 42 runs in 12 balls. The left-hand batter scored 69 runs in 49 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes. After Mumbai Indian batter Tilak Varma, he was the second batter this season to be retired out.
Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla also believes that Devon Conway's technical strength and focus was on hitting the ball around the ground, even while attempting pull shots, which is where the Super Kings team missed the trick.
"Conway is the kind of batter who is more technically strong, and he doesn't try to play that [many shots] in the air. You saw that in the middle overs also, when he was trying to hit a pull shot also, he was rolling his wrists like a proper technical batsman, that's where they missed that point. When Shivam [Dube] tried to hit those bit shots, Conway didn't even try that. At one point, I felt he just wanted to take it deep. But if you want to take the game deep, you don't want your [asking] rate to go out of hand." Piyush Chawla said.
Opener Priyansh Arya's first IPL century assisted the home team PBKS in accumulating 219 runs and securing a win over five-time champions CSK, who were defeated in the match by 18 runs.
After this defeat, CSK is placed in the 9th position with four losses in five matches, and PBKS is placed in the 4th position with three wins out of their four matches.
CSK will now play defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, and PBKS will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
