Jun 15, 2024
Washington [US], June 15 : Warner Bros Animation and DC Studios have unveiled plans for an animated series based on the DC Comics character Blue Beetle, following the 2023 feature film adaptation.
According to Deadline, the project will be helmed by director-showrunner Miguel Puga, known for his work on Nickelodeon's 'The Casagrandes', alongside writer Cristian Martinez, a contributor to 'Good Trouble'.
The animated series will continue the story of Jaime Reyes, who becomes the Blue Beetle after a powerful alien Scarab fuses with his body, granting him extraordinary powers.
This follows the 2023 live-action film that starred Xolo Mariduena as Jaime Reyes, Deadline reported.
Executive producers for the animated series include Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Angel Manuel Soto, the writer and director of the Blue Beetle film, respectively.
Joining them are John Ricard and Galen Vaisman, both serving as executive producers as well.
Further details about the development of the series have been kept under wraps, according to Deadline.
The 'Blue Beetle' film, released in August 2023, received a positive critical reception but faced challenges at the box office, grossing USD 130.8 million globally, marking it as one of the lower-performing entries in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Despite this, the character remains pivotal in the reimagined DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios.
Details regarding the casting for the animated series, including whether Xolo Mariduena and other original cast members will reprise their roles, have not been disclosed, as per reports by Deadline.
Additionally, the series awaits confirmation of its distribution outlet, with Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service Max considered a likely destination.
