New Delhi [India], July 21 : Crime Branch of Delhi Police arrested a private detective who illegally obtained call detail records (CDRs) of mobile numbers under the guise of running a detective agency and sold them for a hefty sum, officials said on Sunday.
According to police, the accused, Tarun Daniel (60) from Delhi, was apprehended following a tip-off that he was involved in the unauthorised extraction and sale of CDRs.
According to Crime Branch officials, undercover officers contacted the suspect, posing as a decoy customer. Tarun demanded Rs 60,000 for obtaining the CDRs of a mobile number.
After negotiation, the decoy customer transferred Rs 29,000 online. The next day, Tarun sent the CDR of the requested mobile number to the decoy customer via WhatsApp and demanded an additional Rs 31,000. The customer agreed to pay the remaining amount in cash and arranged to meet near Dwarka Mod, the official said.
At the meeting, a Crime Branch team laid a trap and arrested Tarun Daniel on the spot, the official added.
During interrogation, Tarun admitted to having contacts within telecommunication companies who could easily procure CDRs, which he would then sell. Currently, the Crime Branch team is searching for others involved in this racket who provided CDRs to Tarun Daniel, the official said.
