Kannauj (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 12 : Former Samajwadi leader Nawab Singh Yadav was arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to rape a 15-year-old girl, the police said.
Sharing information about the matter, Kannauj Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Kumar Anand said, "Last night around 1.30 am, a call was received on UP 112 wherein a girl said that she had been stripped and an attempt of assault had been made on her."
"Kannauj Police reached the spot immediately. The girl was rescued and the accused, Nawab Singh Yadav, was arrested in an objectionable condition," said the SP.
Advocate Naveen Kumar Dubey said, "SP leader Nawab Yadav was arrested by the Kannauj police today and produced him in the court and after hearing arguments from both sides, he was sent to jail for 14 days."
The official further said that during questioning, the girl revealed that the incident took place after she arrived at the residence of Nawab Singh Yadav along with her paternal aunt.
"The minor stated that she was told that she had to be there for a job. The girl is a minor and is around 15 years of age," said the SP.
Subsequently, a case was registered under sections of the BNS and POCSO Acts.
"The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway," said the official.
Nawab Singh Yadav, who was being escorted by the UP police, spoke on the case and claimed, "This is a conspiracy by capitalists. The victim is denying it, but despite that, medical tests are being done six times. We will continue to fight against injustice."
Meanwhile, in an official statement, the Samajwadi Party (SP) distanced itself from Nawab Singh, Dimple Yadav's former close aide, after his arrest in the rape case.
In the letter, District President Kaleem Khan said on Monday (August 12) that Nawab Singh Yadav is "not an active member" of the party.
"He was involved in anti-party activities for about 5 years and he is not an initial or active member of the party," said SP Kannauj District President Kaleem Khan.
Speaking about the same, SP leader Juhie Singh said, "It is an accusation against an old leader of the Samajwadi party. I've just heard the SP's byte. The girl was 15. So what sort of job was she looking for? They knew Nawab Singh for a long time. They had called him up in the morning. So in the night, suddenly, this incident happens. 112 is also dialled from there. So justice has to be done. If the girl has been molested, then she should get justice."
"We demand a narco test. We demand a DNA test. We also demand concrete evidence before anyone is actually accused. And if there is any conspiracy involved, then those who are involved in this conspiracy should also be brought to the book. Justice has to be done to everyone," she stated.
Samajwadi Party MLA Ravidas Mehrotra also reacted to the matter and said, "Nawab Singh Yadav, who has been arrested in the case of attempting to rape a minor girl in Kannauj, has no connection with the Samajwadi Party for the last 5-6 years."
"He is neither a primary nor an active member of the Samajwadi Party. Whoever is guilty of this, strict action should be taken. The government in Uttar Pradesh has failed to protect women and is working to defame the Samajwadi Party to save itself. That miscreant has no connection with the party," he said.
Former BJP MP from Kannauj, Subrat Pathak, also spoke to ANI and said, "I saw the police officer's byte in which he told that the Samajwadi Party leader called a girl on the pretext of a job and tried to rape her. After the Ayodhya incident, another leader of this kind who was also close to the Samajwadi Party got caught in such an incident--what does this indicate? This is the case when they have not formed their government. What will happen once they form government."
Earlier this month, SP leader Moeed Khan and his house help were accused of raping and blackmailing a 12-year-old girl who worked as a daily wage employee at Khan's home in Ayodhya.
A case was filed against the SP leader for allegedly threatening the family of the rape victim to settle the case.
Khan was later arrested for raping the girl for over two months. Later, a case was filed against the SP leader for threatening the family of the rape victim.
The Ayodhya district administration also demolished the "illegally constructed" bakery of accused Moeed Khan.
