Nagaon (Assam) [India], October 20 : The Assam Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption caught a government official red-handed for accepting a bribe and arrested him in Assam's Nagaon district.
The government official, identified as Jalen Baishya, was arrested on Thursday and he was the Acting Principal of the Food Craft Institute in Nagaon's Samaguri.
Joint Director of DIPR Assam, Rajib Saikia, said that a complaint was received at the Assam Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption alleging that Jalen Baishya demanded Rs 2,500 as a bribe from the complainant for releasing payments against supply of vegetables and grocery items to the Food Craft Institute.
"Later, the Acting Principal reduced the amount of bribe to Rs 2,000. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the Directorate to take necessary legal action against the public servant," said Saikia.
"Accordingly, a trap was laid on Thursday by a team from the Assam Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and Baishya was caught red-handed in the presence of independent witnesses, immediately after he accepted Rs 2,000 as demanded by him," he added.
Sakia further informed that the bribe money was recovered from Baishya's possession and the money was seized accordingly in the presence of independent witnesses.
Baishya was arrested by the team of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, and a case has been registered against him under section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), said Sakia.
Necessary legal follow-up action is underway, he added.
