In the current Financial year during April and May GTAC sold 13.39 million kg at an average price of Rs 222.68 which is higher by Rs 24 per kg. From April 1 2023 to May 31 2024, GTAC sold 179.73 million kg of tea. The GTAC total turnover was Rs Rs 3346 crore in last 14 months," Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association told ANI.
He further said that, in the Year 2023 April and May GTAC sold 12.98 million kg of tea at an average price of Rs 198.85.
Another feat was reached earlier this month when CTC (crush, tear, curl) tea leaves sold by grower Hookhmol fetched a record price of Rs 723 per kilogram.
"Guwahati Tea Auction Center this year has made two records when a tea of Hookhmol Tea Estate sold at Rs 723 per kg and a bought leaf Bejopathar tea was sold at Rs 471. Due to climate change, this year's crop for May and June may be down by 40 million kg. Due to this prices of tea might remain higher upto to Rs 50 from last year. In recent times the much awaited rainfall has arrived to all tea-growing districts. We hope whatever production loss we have made we recover in the coming months," Dinesh Bihani said.
Tea is the lifeline industry of Assam and 90 per cent of the state's total exports are tea alone. The livelihood of millions is dependent upon the tea plantation industry.
