Dec 11, 2024
New Delhi [India], December 11 : Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad on Wednesday said that the Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar should asses the no-confidence motion against him and change his stand.
Speaking to ANI, Prasad said "Be it Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha, these are huge temples of democracy. It is from here that solutions to basic problems of public and countrymen are expected... When our Rajya Sabha members try to raise all the issues of public interest, then somewhere or the other, the pressure of the government is seen in it. this no-confidence motion is in the public interest. Although it will not pass based on numbers. the Chairman will have to consider this matter. it is hoped that the Chairman after assessing the sentiment of the members will change his stand for the benefit of the countrymen..."
This comes in after the opposition INDI alliance submitted a no-confidence motion against the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar to the Secretary General of the Upper House.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said tha the opposition had moved the no-confidence motion to save democracy.
"To save democracy, we moved the no-confidence motion yesterday...Today, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that it is an insult to the farmers. But how? You (BJP) don't let the LoP speak. Isn't that an insult to Dalits? The Rajya Sabha Chairman himself has said that the Modi govt is not listening demands of farmers...There is no personal fight with him (House Chairman) ...We had no role in the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha today...The government did not want the House to function...I hope the House will function tomorrow. We are ready for discussion. Some BJP MPs have told me they understand our sentiment behind bringing this motion," Ramesh said.
TMC MP Sushmita Dev said the onus was on the treasury benches to get the house to function normally.
"...NDA is National Disaster Alliance. They have only one aim - there should be no discussion in the House. In Rajya Sabha, TMC gave two notices on inflation and the rising price of fertilisers...Parliamentary Affairs Minister should be ashamed that he is not able to run the Parliament. We are continuously saying that Parliament should be run," she said.
The first session of the winter Parliament commenced on November 25, with both Houses getting adjourned fairly early due to disruptions. The winter session will go on till December 20.
