India logs 17,092 new COVID cases in last 24 hours

New Delhi [India], July 2 : In a slight uptick in the new COVID cases, India logged 17,092 fresh infections in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday.
The country had reported 17,070 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday with a case positivity rate of 3.40 per cent while the daily case positivity rate jumped to 4.14 per cent today.
With this, the active cases in the country stand at 1,09,568.
As many as 14,684 COVID patients recovered in the last 24 hours taking the total number of recoveries from the disease since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,28,51,590. The recovery rate is 98.54 per cent.
According to the Ministry, 29 patients succumbed to the virus during this period. The death toll rose to 5,25,168.
4,12,570 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. The total number of tests conducted so far in the country reached 86.32 crores.
The weekly positivity rate is 3.56 per cent.
Under the nationwide vaccination drive, 9,09,776 COVID vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours. The total number of vaccine shots jabbed so far reaches 1,97,84,80,015.
In the new phase of the universalization of the COVID vaccination drive, the Union Government will procure and supply (free of cost) 75 per cent of the vaccines being produced by the vaccine manufacturers in the country to States and UTs.
Amid the recent surge reported in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Health Ministry of India on June 9 urged States and Union Territories to not lower their guards and strictly maintain COVID appropriate behaviour.
Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has written a letter to States/UTs and directed them to ramp up RT-PCR testing, surveillance, clinical management, vaccination, COVID-19 protocols and take timely pre-emptive actions.
