Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], October 3 : National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah Tuesday said that the Jammu and Kashmir opposition parties have jointly decided to hold a peaceful protest against what he called "suspension of the Constitution" on October 10 here in Jammu.
Speaking to the media in Jammu after an all-party meeting on Tuesday, the NC veteran said, "We (opposition parties) have jointly decided that on October 10 a peaceful protest will be held against the present condition of Jammu & Kashmir, how the Constitution has been suspended, and how our rights have been attacked..."
The all-party meeting attended by the Peoples Democratic Party among others was called to "discuss the political situation" in the region.
The former CM further said they would write to the State administration and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to seek permission for their protest.
On August 5, 2019, the Central government announced the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370 and split the region into two Union territories.
The Constitution bench of the Supreme Court had reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.
The Central government has defended its decision to abrogate Article 370, saying post the changes, street violence, which was engineered and orchestrated by terrorists and secessionist networks has now become a thing of the past.
Since 2019, when Article 370 was abrogated, the entire region has witnessed an “unprecedented era of peace, progress and prosperity”, the Centre told the Supreme Court earlier in the year.
After the abrogation of Article 370 life has returned to normalcy there after three decades of turmoil, the Centre in its affidavit had told the Supreme Court.
It has been said that schools, colleges and universities have been functioning without any strikes during the last three years.
