Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], October 17 : In an endeavour to preserve and rejuvenate the rich cultural heritage of Srinagar's Downtown area, the Srinagar Smart City project has embarked on a series of transformative initiatives.
The jewel of Jammu and Kashmir, is not just known for its breathtaking natural beauty, but also for its rich cultural heritage.
In recent years, a remarkable transformation has been unfolding in the city, as the Srinagar Smart City Project is bringing its heritage buildings back to life.
The downtown's heritage buildings, some dating back centuries, had been showing signs of wear and neglect.
Recognizing the importance of preserving this cultural legacy, the Srinagar Smart City Project was launched in 2020, and it has since become a beacon of hope for the preservation and rejuvenation of the city's architectural treasures.
Under this project, meticulous planning and community involvement have played pivotal roles. Teams of architects, historians, and local residents worked together to identify the heritage structures in dire need of restoration.
Extensive research was conducted, including consultations with elder citizens who shared valuable stories and insights about the city's past.
Chief Engineer of Srinagar Smart City, Iftikar Kakroo, while talking to ANI said, "The treasure that's our old city. The architecture, the language, and the history are priceless. We hope to bring this heritage back to life as part of the ongoing Smart City work. We are restoring Srinagar's heritage and one work will be executed at one time followed by the same."
"The main old heritage is the reconstruction of the old Beaupur Mandal in the Maharaj Gunj area of downtown. The restoration efforts have combined traditional craftsmanship with modern technology," Kakroo said.
Skilled artisans painstakingly revived the historical elements, ensuring the building's heritage remained intact. While preserving the building's historical essence, modern amenities were discreetly incorporated, he added.
Srinagar's Smart City Project is a shining example of how a balance between modernization and heritage preservation can breathe new life into a city while honouring its roots.
With projects spanning across Nowhatta, Malaratta, Naqashbandi Sahab, Saraf Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara, Jamia Masjid streets, Maharajganj, Zainakadal, Alikadal, Nawakadal-Nawa Bazar, Pather Masjid, and more, Srinagar's cherished heritage is on the path to restoration.
