Guwahati (Assam) [India], November 9 : Chairman of Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill Jagdambika Pal has slammed Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh over his remarks about the parliamentary panel and said its work is being discussed and lauded by people.
Jagdambika Pal said JPC has held regular meetings and opposition MPs have participated regularly and that the panel is trying to reach out to large number of people before it finalises its report..
"With his statements, he (Sanjay Singh) is commenting on Parliamentary democracy and himself... We have held 25 8-hour long meetings in Delhi and the opposition is actively asking questions and all these things are on record. An MP calling this Parliamentary democracy a drama is unfortunate and condemnable... A JPC is formed so that the government can know the will of the people by going among them and visiting all regions of the country to pass a better resolution... These days we are in the north-east and will visit many cities... This is a very serious exercise," Jagdambika Pal told ANI.
The Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is conducting a study tour from November 9 to November 14 during which it will visit Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Patna, and Lucknow.
Earlier today, AAP leader Sanjay Singh called the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) tour a drama and a medium to divert attention from the issues.
"If the opposition does not go to a meeting, the quorum remains incomplete. I do not know whether the quorum is being completed or not in today's Guwahati tour. This JPC is a drama. The JPC was just a medium to divert attention from the issues. In reality, the Modi government does not want any discussion in JPC," Singh said.
The committee plans to present its report on the bill to the House by the end of the first week of the Winter Session of Parliament, which will be held from November 25 to December 20.
