Sep 19, 2024
New York [US], September 19 : Jaipur Foot US, a subsidiary of the world's largest organisation for the differently-abled, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), commonly known as Jaipur Foot, and BRUHUD, one of the largest organisations for seniors in New York, came together to wish Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 74th birthday and celebrated the Indian leader's birthday on Tuesday.
PM Modi celebrated his 74th birthday on Tuesday. He was born on September 17, 1950, in Gujarat.
The occasion featured a millet-based lunch and the event also honoured BMVSS founder and Chief Patron, Padma Bhushan Dr. DR Mehta, who is currently on a ten-day visit to the United States. The celebration was held at SAAR, a prominent Indian restaurant near Times Square, the first Indian restaurant in New York to introduce a millet menu last year, following the initiative of Jaipur Foot US and the Indian Consulate in New York. This was in response to the United Nations declaring 2023 as the "International Year of Millets" at the request of PM Modi.
Prem Bhandari, Chairman of Jaipur Foot US, spoke at the event and praised Modi as India's most "consequential" Prime Minister, noting that in his ten years in office, PM Modi has emerged as one of the world's most influential leaders. He highlighted PM Modi's unique ability to maintain strong relationships with both US and Russian leadership, and said, "We pray for his long and healthy life, as both India and the world need his leadership now more than ever."
Bhandari further stated that BMVSS was founded by Dr DR Mehta in 1975, and since its inception, it has benefitted over 2.2 million differently-abled individuals across 43 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America through 109 completely free artificial limb fitment camps known as 'Jaipur Foot.' Out of these, 28 camps have been fully sponsored by the Government of India under the 'India for Humanity' initiative.
Bhandari also expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for making BMVSS a partner in the 'India for Humanity' initiative, launched to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary. Under this initiative, the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, has organised 28 international camps, with the 29th camp scheduled to take place in Mongolia. The Jaipur Foot team is set to depart for Mongolia on September 22.
