Jamia Millia Islamia pays tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on birth anniversary; celebrates Swachh Bharat Diwas

New Delhi [India], October 2 : Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) celebrated Swacch Bharat Diwas 2024 on Wednesday to commemorate the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and to mark the completion of 10 years of the launch of one of the most significant mass movements for cleanliness--the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The university paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by organising several programmes under "Swachhata Hi Seva Mela 2024."
Volunteers of NSS, JMI, under the supervision of its Programme Officer, Dr Abid Hussain, took out an awareness rally, which was flagged off by Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Shakeel from VC Office premises.
The rally culminated at the Centenary Gate of the university after taking a round of the campus and nearby areas.
M Nasim Haider, Officiating Registrar, JMI, also joined the Vice Chancellor in flagging off the rally. Apart from volunteers of NSS, teachers and non-teaching staff of the university also joined in the rally.
Dr Zakir Husain Library and the Office of the Deans Students' Welfare (DSW) of the university jointly organised a lecture and an exhibition titled "Mahatma Gandhi: Life and Works."
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor in the presence of the Registrar, JMI, M Nasim Haider, Deans, University Librarian Dr Vikas S. Nagrale, teachers and non-teaching staff.
Some of the handwritten private letters of Mahatma Gandhi in different languages, his photographs, books on him and by him, a copy of his newspaper 'Young India' and other significant archival materials have been displayed as part of the exhibition. The exhibition will be open to the audience for one week.
A special lecture commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi was also organised in the Library. Professor Ravindran Gopinath from the Department of History JMI delivered the lecture.
The program was concluded with a vote of thanks by the Deputy Librarian, Dr Sufian Ahmad.
