Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], September 29 : Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has condoled the demise of Communist Party of India (Marxist) activist and survivor of the 1994 Koothuparamba police firing, Pushpan, who passed away at a private hospital in Kozhikode on September 28.
The former Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader who was injured in the Kuthuparamba firing incident on November 25, 1994, passed away after being bedridden for the last three decades. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode.
His cremation is set to take place in Kannur tomorrow.
"Comrade Pushpan has left us at the end of his sufferings of three decades. The heart of every communist, who used to get excited hearing that name, is saddened at this moment. Another unforgettable chapter in the history of the party is burning within us like a fire with Comrade," the Chief Minister said. The CPI (M) member also hailed the DYFI leader as a symbol of "resilience" via a social media post on his X account.
"Comrade Pushpan, a symbol of resilience and unwavering resolve, has left us. Bedridden for three decades after the brutal Kuthuparamba firing, he stood tall in spirit. His life of sacrifice will forever inspire us in the fight for a just, egalitarian society. His legacy lives on in our struggle" the CM added.
Vijayan recalling the events of 1994, said, "This country will never forget. Comrade Pushpan bravely faced the then United Democratic Front (UDF) UDF terror, which took the lives of five DYFI activists, namely KV Roshan, Shibulal, Babu, and Madhu, but lost his own life. The Koothuparamba firing made the comrade bedridden forever."
The Chief Minister also praised Pushpan's commitment to his ideals.
"Comrade Pushpan's communist nucleus has not been shaken despite the fact that he had to fight with his ill health, which brought disaster for the rest of his life. He has no regrets about the tragedy he faced. He was not driven by selfish ambitions, but by the courage to sacrifice himself for the country and firm communist convictions. It was an unusual loyalty to the party" Vijayan added.
The Kerala Chief Minister concluded, "Comrade's martyrdom is both an unquenchable pain and an unquenchable thrill for the Party. Comrade Pushpan is the answer to the question of what a communist is for every comrade in this country. Therefore, the death of a comrade has created deep sorrow for everyone. Comrade Pushpan's life made us realise the greatness of a revolutionary. Tributes to Comrade Pushpan, an immortal symbol of philanthropy and sacrifice. I share in the pain of my friends and family."
