Kerala: Heavy rainfall prompts school closures in Wayanad district

Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram) [India], July 17 : Due to heavy rainfall, all educational institutions in Wayanad district will remain closed on Thursday. This includes professional colleges. Pre-scheduled exams, including PSC exams, will proceed as planned. Model Residential and Navodaya Schools are exempt from this closure. The weather department has issued a red alert for Wayanad, predicting severe rainfall.
Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for eight districts: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in these regions.
A yellow alert has been announced for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts. Orange alerts have been declared for ten districts tomorrow, including Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Yellow alerts are in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts.
The Kerala coast is expected to experience winds reaching speeds of up to 55 km/h. The weather department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until Sunday.
Earlier, due to the continued heavy rains in the state, district administrations of eight districts ordered the closure of educational institutions in their respective districts on Wednesday. The districts where the holiday had been declared are Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Alappuzha, and Kottayam.
Alappuzha district declared the holiday due to persistent heavy rains and waterlogging.
District collectors have clarified that there will be no changes to the previously scheduled exams.
The weather department issued a warning that heavy rains will continue in the state for the next four days.
