Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], October 1 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday paid a surprise visit to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward in Mumbai to inspect the implementation of the cleanliness drive.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called upon people across the country to take part in a cleanliness drive on October 1 beginning at 10 am and said that Swachh Bharat is a shared responsibility, and every effort counts.
After visiting the BMC ward, CM Shinde said that based on the complaints received regarding the lack of cleanliness from the specific ward he came there to inspect the area.
"Under the cleanliness campaign, cleanliness programs are being conducted in different areas of the country. I've come here on the basis of a complaint received regarding lack of cleanliness from here," he said.
Shinde further informed that actions will be taken against the officers who are negligent and he has directed to serve a show cause notice to those officers who didn't take care of this area.
"After inspecting the place, instructions have been given to identify spots with lack of cleanliness in the entire Mumbai and there should not be a single place where there is filth. Along with this, action will be taken against the corporation officers who are negligent," Shinde said.
"I've also asked to serve a show cause notice to the officers who did not come here earlier and did not take care of the area," he added.
Earlier in the day, CM Shinde interacted with children as he arrived to attend the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' program organized by BMC in Mumbai.
The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on October 2, 2014, with an aim to make the country open defecation-free and also universal sanitation coverage. Exhorting the people across the country to get involved in the cleanliness campaign, PM Modi said taking the campaign forward would be a giant step towards fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi's dream of a clean India.
