Malayalis celebrate Onam with joyous gatherings and feasts

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], August 29 : Today marks the joyous occasion of Thiruvonam, as Malayalis come together to celebrate the harvest festival of Onam.
Falling in the Malayalam month of "Chingam," Onam holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Kerala. Malayalis are embracing this Onam with renewed enthusiasm.
The festival has kicked off with special prayers at temples, and families are celebrating Onam in the comfort of their homes.
Vyshna, a local resident, expressed her joy, saying, "Wishing everyone a happy Onam! After COVID, this is the first time we can celebrate without restrictions or masks. Let us come together to celebrate our Onam."
Onam is traditionally a family-oriented celebration, with the centrepiece being the grand feast known as 'Sadhya.'
Families come together to prepare a sumptuous spread of various curries and payasam. The traditional ritual of 'Atham' also holds a special place during these festivities.
Avanthika, a college student, shared her excitement, saying, "Onam is a special day for us, especially now that we are in college. We enjoy traditional games and sports, like the tug of war."
Many recall fond memories of their childhood Onam celebrations.
Tasnima mentioned, "Onam means Pokémon competitions. It's a day to wear new clothes and gather with old relatives. It's a celebration of togetherness."
Megha, hailing from Malappuram, added, "Ornaments mean getting together. Days before Onam, we purchase new clothes and plan themed costumes with cousins. The feast and payasam are the highlights, and we enjoy games and singing together."
Sanjana summarized the essence of Onam, stating, "Onam is an opportunity to gather with relatives, friends, and neighbours. It's an occasion to celebrate and share good moments."
Onam, a festival known for its unity, rich culture, and sumptuous food, continues to bring Malayalis closer, even in challenging times.
