Mizoram: Assam Rifles arrests 1 involved smuggling of heroin from Champhai

Champhai (Mizoram) [India], November 2 : In yet another success in its crusade against smuggling activities, Assam Rifles, carried out two operations in the Champhai district of Mizoram on Saturday. In the first operation Assam Rifles arrested an individual (Lalrempuia age 25) and seized 'Heroin No 4' from the general area Zote. In the second operation, recovered illegal areca nuts from Keifangtlang.
The first operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Excise and Narcotics while the second one was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs Preventive Force, Champhai, an official release stated.
Both operations were based on specific information and the entire consignment amounting to Rs 1.48 cr has been handed over to Excise & Narcotics and Customs Preventive Force, Champhai for further legal proceedings, the release stated.
Ongoing smuggling of drugs and contraband items is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram and India. Assam Rifles have continued their efforts against illegal smuggling and have also doubled their efforts to nab the kingpins of the smuggling of contraband items in Mizoram.
On Thursday, Assam Rifles in coordination with the Excise and Narcotics Department recovered heroin worth approximately Rs 15.94 lakh, weighing around 22.78 grams and apprehended a woman in Mizoram's Lunglei on Thursday, officials said.
According to officials, the woman was suspected to be involved in drug peddling and was under constant surveillance for past few days.
Based on intelligence, Assam Rifles launched a joint operation in the early morning of 31 October 2024.During the operation, Heroin No. 4, was recovered and the woman was apprehended.
The woman and the seized items are under the custody of the Excise and Narcotics Department, Lunglei, for further investigation, they added.
