Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), October 27 : Minister of State for External Affairs and Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh said that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam would help the northeast since the society is dominated by women.
"Very recently our Prime Minister initiated to pass the Bill on the reservation of women. So this 33 per cent reservation of women in the northeast will be helpful because in the northeast we have a women-dominated economy, domestic products and even the society is controlled by women," Rajkumar said.
The Minister of State said that the Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded candidates in a few constituencies in Mizoram ahead of the upcoming November 7 polls.
"In Mizoram, we are sending out candidates in a few selected assembly constituencies," he said.
Rajkumar said that he is hopeful that women candidates would be supported by the sensible citizenship and participation of women in Mizoram.
"...We hope that the sensible electorates of North East India particularly Mizoram support women candidates. I hope some women candidates are selected and that have to be supported by the sensible citizenship and participation of women in Mizoram. We hope to certainly win the election," the Minister of State said.
In a 40-member Mizoram assembly, Mizo National Front bagged 26 seats with a vote share of 37.8 per cent to emerge victorious in the 2018 polls. Congress secured five seats and BJP won one seat.
Polls will be held in Mizoram on November 7, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and November 17, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 25 and Telangana on November 30. The counting of votes will take place on December 3 in all the states.
The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with the announcement of poll dates. The elections to five states are crucial as they are being held months before the Lok Sabha elections in April-May next year.
