Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], September 8 : Amid a nationwide row, erupted after Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks on Sanatana Dharma, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said that he is not here to comment on anyone's religion as religion and politics are two different things.
While speaking to reporters in Chhattisgarh, Kharge said "I am not here to say on anyone's religion. I am just here to participate in the programme organised for the poor. Religion and politics are two different things. No need to mix both things. I don't want to argue on this."
The DMK leader Udhayanidhi's remark on Sanatana Dharma sparked massive controversy across the nation with several BJP leaders and Hindu priests strongly criticising his statement.
On September 2, speaking at a public event, Stalin called for the 'eradication' of Sanatana Dharma and compared the same with diseases like dengue, malaria etc.
Hailing the Chhattisgarh government Kharge said that the benefits that the Chhattisgarh Congress government is giving are a big thing.
"The benefits that the Chhattisgarh Congress government is giving is a big thing. People should get facilities and when they get facilities there's a wave of happiness among them," he added.
Earlier in the day, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said that it is very “unfortunate” that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge has not been invited to the G20 Summit in New Delhi.
“This is a very unfortunate thing that he is not being called in the summit. The dissent of the Opposition should be respected. Leaders of the opposition have a very important role in a socialist society,” Baghel said while talking to the reporters here.
The Chhattisgarh Assembly polls are scheduled to be held later this year.
