Imphal (Manipur) [India], April 14 : Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said that the people of the state would be happy over the Centre's intent to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as people of the state have been demanding "constitutional protection".
Speaking to ANI, the Manipur Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have done a lot for the state.
"The key issues of Manipur are mainly three. The Indigenous people have a demand that they want constitutional protection ... The PM and the Home Minister are doing a lot... The 398-km border along with Myanmar should be fenced, which is the demand of the people... Free Movement Regime, in which free movement is allowed within 16 kilometres, should be removed... Illegal migrants should be removed through NRC. PM Modi and the Home Minister are doing and have done a lot. The fencing has started. The FMR has been scrapped. The screening of illegal Myanmar migrants has started through biometrics and eye scanning. The only thing left is NRC. The people of Manipur would be happy with the decision of NRC," Biren Singh said.
"Home Minister ji came here to Manipur when there was a crisis in the state. He stayed three days in the state and analysed the whole situation and tried his best to control the situation. Now the Lok Sabha elections are here and the Home Minister is coming. It is our responsibility to give inner and outer seats of Manipur to the BJP," he said.
When asked if the law and order would be the key issue in the elections, he said that for the last 3-4 months the situation is under control. There is not a problem with the law and order everything is fine for now.
"We are trying our best to control everything. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister and Home Minister, we talked to both communities. We have made a peace committee. It is in progress. I believe that everything will be fine," he said.
Amit Shah visited the state of Manipur from May 29 to June 1 last year and announced the constitution of the Peace Committee after taking stock of the situation.
On being asked about poll promises he said that his priority is to bring peace to the state adding that to provide protection to Indigenous people.
"The Opposition work is to criticise, to discredit. Their agenda is to create problems in the state. But I thank god, PM Modi and the Home Minister. Because of them, the improvement is being seen in the state. Their work is to speak and no one is there to listen to them," he added.
He further asserted that there is no conflict with Kukis, their fight is with the people who have come illegally.
"We all are one and citizen of the country," he said.
Singh further reacted to the BJP manifesto and said that the BJP is for development.
"After Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, we have seen development. The connectivity of roads and infrastructure has increased. Due to the crises, the development slowed down in the state but it never stopped. There is a great development," he said.
Responding to border fencing he said that doing the fencing at the necessary places is important.
"Drugs are coming, arms smuggling is taking place in the state. It is important to stop all these. If these activities will take place then Indian Government will take some action. There is discipline and culture in the BJP to respect their alliance. In Manipur, there are two seats. The women of the state want peace," he said.
Notably, the BJP and the NPP have been partners in the governments in Manipur.
Ethnic clashes erupted in the Northeast state in May, last year, after a tribal solidarity march organised to protest against an order of the Manipur High Court, asking the state government to consider including the majority community in the state in the list of Scheduled Tribes, took a violent turn.
In a statement on September 15, last year, Manipur Police informed that the violence claimed 175 lives, while another 1,138 were injured 33 people were reported missing.
In January this year, after reports of fresh violence in the state, a three-member team from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), headed by advisor AK Mishra, was sent to Imphal to assess the situation in the violence-hit state.
The Lok Sabha elections in Manipur will be held on 19 April and 26 April from the constituencies of Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur.
