Rain lashes several parts of Mumbai; IMD issues yellow alert

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 19 : Mumbai city on Wednesday woke up to cloudy skies and several parts of the city received rainfall in the morning.
The temperature in Mumbai was recorded at 28.65 degrees Celsius today. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 33 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees respectively for the next two days.
It has also been predicted that light to moderate rain will continue the whole day in the city on Wednesday.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for today and tomorrow. However, after June 20, there is no warning for the city.
Neighbouring cities like Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Pune will observe yellow alert conditions till June 23.
"Conditions are favorable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Northwest Bay of Bengal, some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, the remaining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and some parts of Bihar & Jharkhand during the next 3-4 days," the IMD said in its bulletin.
The weather department has also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in the state from June 19-23.
The IMD has forecast that heatwave conditions will continue across many parts of northern India.
"Heatwave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in many/most parts of Uttar Pradesh on the 18th & 19th; in some parts on the 20th over Punjab," it said.
It mentioned that the country recorded less rainfall in June compared to its Lond Period Average (LPA).
"Rainfall over the country as a whole for June 2024 (till June 18) was 64.5 mm which was 20 per cent less than its Long Period Average (LPA) of 80.6 mm," the IMD said.
The weather department also informed that the highest Maximum Temperature of 47.6 degrees Celsius was reported at Prayagraj (East Uttar Pradesh) over the country on Tuesday.
As per the IMD, East India will witness a decrease in the temperature by 2-3 degrees Celsius during the next three days.
"Hot & Humid weather is very likely over Odisha during 18th-20th; Gangetic West Bengal on the 18th and Bihar on the 20th June 2024," IMD added.
This year's Monsoon onset was two days earlier as the usual date is on June 1. This year, Kerala experienced widespread pre-monsoon rains.
