SC declines to entertain Delhi govt's plea against LG's decision on marshal scheme in DTC buses

New Delhi [India], December 14 : The Supreme Court declined to entertain a plea of the Delhi government challenging Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena's decision to terminate the services of all civil defence volunteers working as marshals in DTC buses here.
A bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the AAP government, to approach the Delhi High Court with the plea.
On Singhvi's request, the bench asked the High Court to decide the government's petition expeditiously.
During the brief hearing, a senior advocate told the apex court that all good schemes shoring up the government's popularity are being stalled.
He asked, "Does this (terminating the services of marshals) fall under LG? How can he stop it?"
The bench, however, asked why the High Court cannot look into the issue; this is not some constitutional issue that the apex court will look into.
"The petition seeks re-operationalization of the bus marshal scheme. In our view, the appropriate remedy would be to approach the High Court. In the event the petitioner approaches the High Court, the High Court shall take it up expeditiously," ordered the bench.
On October 27, LG approved a proposal to terminate the services of all civil defence volunteers from November 1 and directed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to consider recruiting the civil defence volunteers whose services were terminated as home guards.
