SC rejects West Bengal govt plea challenging Calcutta HC order granting bail to 'Nabanna Abhijan' organiser

New Delhi [India], September 2 : The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the West Government plea challenging the Calcutta High Court order which directed to release 'Nabanna Abhijan' organiser Sayan Lahiri in connection with protest against RG Kar incident on August 27.
A bench of justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra dismissed the plea filed by West Bengal government.
A complaint was lodged by the Sub Inspector of the New Market Police Station on August 27 alleging that the Sayan Lahiri along with other around 150 agitators assembled at Jawharlal Nehru Road and SN Banerjee Road crossing commonly known as Dorinna crossing under the banner of Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj and called for Nabanna Abhijan.They unlawfully assembled there without any permission, blocked the road and disrupted normal vehicular and pedestrian movement.
They raised slogans over the issue of the RG Kar Hospital incident, the police said.
In the evening of August 27, Sayan Lahiri was detained by the police of the Maidan Police Station and was taken into custody.
Sayam's mother moved the Calcutta High Court seeking relief for his son. The Calcutta High Court on August 30 granted him bail in the matter.
On August 27, a protest march to West Bengal Secretariat 'Nabanna' was organised by the 'Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj' and other organisations, which aimed to protest the recent rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The rally termed "Nabanna Abhijan" started from the College Square in the capital of West Bengal, amid heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat with protestors gathering at the Santragachi area in Howrah.
The sexual assault of the trainee doctor has sparked massive outrage and shaken the conscience of the country.
The case was transferred to the CBI from the Kolkata police following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
