Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 27 : The Sealdah division of the Eastern Railway took a slew of measures in view of Cyclone 'Remal' making landfall over coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
The Sealdah division has set up Emergency control rooms from May 25 to May 27 and installed pumps at all critical places to mitigate water logging. Public announcements were also made frequently at all stations, the Railways said.
Moreover, DG sets and emergency lights have been arranged at stations and sufficient tree-cutting equipment was kept at critical locations. Tower wagons were kept ready with staff to move quickly to attend to Overhead equipment (OHE) problems.
At critical locations, especially those bordering Bangladesh like Namkhana, Diamond Harbour, Hasnabad and Canning, adequate Engineering, Signal and Telecom staff were kept in place to combat crises, the Railways said.
In addition, security personnel were deployed round the clock throughout the Division. The rakes that were stabled, were properly secured and diesel locomotives were stationed at key locations in the division.
Advertisement boards and hoardings at different stations were removed to prevent any mishaps during the cyclonic storm, the Railways said.
Meanwhile, after making landfall over coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that severe Cyclonic storm 'Remal' would continue to move nearly northwards for some more time and then north-northeastwards and weaken gradually into a Cyclonic Storm.
