Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 12 : Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai on Friday said that Union Minister Smriti Irani is losing her mental balance with repeated attacks on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, adding that she needs to consult a good doctor.
"I just want to say that Smriti Irani's level of discourse is going down day by day. She is losing her mental balance that's why we are seeing such remarks. For Rahul Gandhi, Amethi and Wayanad are both important. She needs to consult a good doctor. She is a cabinet minister, PM Modi should get her treated at a good hospital," Ajai Rai told ANI.
The remarks came after Smriti Irani said that the Gandhi family was nowhere to be seen in Amethi when the coronavirus pandemic hit the country.
"You have seen Congress' politics in this area. You all have seen Congress disappear. No member of Gandhi's family was seen in Amethi. However, I was travelling door to door in the villages. I am not asking for your support based on caste but as a conscientious citizen of Amethi," she said.
While the BJP has announced that Irani will seek re-election from Amethi, the Congress is yet to declare its candidate for the seat. Rahul Gandhi lost to Irani in the 2019 general elections.
Meanwhile, the Congress Central Election Committee will hold a meeting tomorrow evening at the party headquarters in Delhi to discuss the candidates for Lok Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab.
The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country will be held in seven phases starting April 19. Nearly 97 crore voters are eligible to cast votes in the 2024 general elections. The counting of votes has been scheduled for June 4.
The most populous state, which sends the most members to the Lower House of Parliament, at 80, will poll across all seven phases.
