New Delhi [India], October 25 : Australian batter Steve Smith overtook compatriot and legendary wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist to be in second place in fifty-plus scores for his country in the annals of the Cricket World Cup.
Smith achieved this record in the World Cup match against Netherlands on Wednesday.
In the match, Smith made 71 in 68 balls with nine fours and a six.
This was his 10th fifty-plus score for Australia in the Cricket World Cup.
In 29 World Cup games, Smith has scored 977 runs at an average of 42.47, with a century and nine fifties.
Ricky Ponting is Australia's top run-getter and overall second-best run-getter with 1,743 runs at an average of 45.86, with five centuries and six fifties. His best score is 140* in the World Cup.
Gilchrist has 1,085 runs in 31 World Cup games at an average of over 36, with one century and eight fifties.
Australia opted to bat first and scored 399/8 in just 50 overs. They defeated the Netherlands by a record 309 runs.
