New Delhi [India], October 24 : The Chief Justice of India stated that he has stopped going for morning walks because of the rising levels of air pollution."I have stopped going out for morning walks due to the rising levels of air pollution in the national capital," he said.
Chief Justice Chandrachud recently shared his concerns about the rising pollution levels in the city during an informal interaction with journalists at the Supreme Court. He mentioned that his doctor has advised him to avoid morning walks due to the poor air quality, which could lead to respiratory issues.
On a separate note, he announced that journalists are no longer required to hold a law degree to cover the apex court's proceedings. This update was shared at a pre-Diwali gathering held at the Supreme Court premises. Justice Chandrachud is set to retire on November 10.
Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi has already plummeted to 'very poor' quality. According to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Air Quality Index (AQI) of 385 was recorded on Thursday morning.
Experts have pointed out that stubble burning, although is a serious issue that needs to be addressed, is not the only reason behind the air pollution in Delhi. Multiple other factors contribute to the menace causing pollution in the city.
The issue of the rise in air pollution contributed by stubble burning is a practice of burning crop residues on farm fields, leading to massive emissions of smoke, which is considered very hazardous for air quality.
According to experts, farmers resort to stubble burning, because the gap between the two harvests is very small, and the farmers lack the facility to deal with the issue.
