Patna (Bihar) [India], October 20 : Following the loss of 33 lives in the Bihar hooch tragedy, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Misa Bharti remarked on Sunday that such incidents occur in states where alcohol is banned.
The RJD MP called for strict action against those found responsible.
"Such incidents happen in a state where alcohol is banned. This is a tragic event. We want the government to take strict action, and the Chief Minister who imposed this ban must ensure such incidents do not recur," Misa Bharti said.
Earlier, RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav criticised the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government, describing the incident as "unfortunate" and lamenting the widespread deaths.
"The government is ineffective. The deaths caused by illicit liquor are tragic. Fatalities are occurring everywhere. It's deeply saddening," said Lalu Yadav.
The Bihar hooch tragedy has claimed 33 lives, with 28 deaths reported in Siwan and 5 in Saran.
The incident has triggered a political blame game, with opposition parties questioning the effectiveness of the liquor ban imposed by the Nitish Kumar government on the sale and consumption of alcohol.
Criticising the NDA government, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav labelled Nitish Kumar's liquor ban the "biggest corruption" of his administration, alleging that a "parallel economy" worth Rs 30,000 crore operates under the guise of the JDU and its leaders.
Union Minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the tragedy, promising that no one would be spared.
"It is deeply saddening that many people have lost their lives due to the consumption of illicit liquor. Investigations are underway, and several suspects have been arrested. This highlights the seriousness of our government. Those involved will face strict action, and no one will be exempt," Paswan stated.
