New Delhi [India], July 25 : Amid the opposition protest, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised his party MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Thursday for his remarks during the budget discussion on July 24 in Lok Sabha and said that the Speaker of the House has power to take action.
Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that such remarks should not be made by any member and the Speaker has the power to take action.
Former judge of the Calcutta High Court and BJP MP from West Bengal, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, got into a fiery exchange with Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi during his maiden speech in Parliament.
During his maiden speech, Gangopadhyay's remarks to the opposition members who interrupted him invited criticism and were, however, later expunged from the record.
The members of the opposition parties protested on Thursday also against the remarks made in the Lower House on Wednesday and demanded an apology from Gangopadhyay and the government over the MP's remarks.
Speaking on the matter, Speaker Om Birla said that all members should make remarks in keeping with the dignity of the House.
"While such remarks are expunged, in future, no member should make such remarks in their speeches or make remarks while sitting on their seats," Birla added.
He further said that no member should seek to challenge the remarks of the Chair and take care of the dignity of the House. With opposition members still protesting, he said that he has already issued a warning.
