"There has been no development in Kerala, this will certainly change": BJP's Sobha Surendran
Apr 26, 2024
Thrissur (Kerala) [India], April 26 : Sobha Surendran, BJP candidate from Kerala's Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency, said that there has been no development in Kerala while asserting that it will "change" if the BJP is elected to power.
"There has been no change or development in Kerala. People have trust in Modi ji's guarantee. We are ready to work to serve the people. The atmosphere will certainly change in Kerala," Sobha told ANI on Friday.
Sobha Surendran cast her vote from Kerala's Thrissur earlier in the day. BJP has fielded Sobha from the Alappuzha seat against incumbent MP and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader AM Ariff and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.
Alappuzha is a stronghold of Congress, though this constituency has a communist legacy. Venugopal has a successful electoral history in Alappuzha, where he won the seat in the 2009 and 2014 general elections.
The land of backwaters, with its history of swinging in favour of both the majors, Congress and the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), comprises seven assembly segments spread across Alappuzha and Kollam districts, namely, Aroor, Cherthala, Alappuzha, Ambalappuzha, Haripad, Kayamkulam and Karunagappally.
The BJP has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, the party registered a victory in the Thiruvananthapuram district just once, with O Rajagopal winning the Nemam assembly seat in 2016.
In the 2019 polls, the BJP's Kummanam Rajasekharan won 31.3 per cent of votes in Thiruvananthapuram, the largest vote share achieved by the party in all 20 Lok Sabha constituencies it contested in the state.
The voting in all 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala will be completed today in the second phase along with 12 other states/UTs. A total of 88 constituencies are polling in the second phase across the country on Friday. The results will be announced on June 4.
