Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 19 : Transgender activist and member of the Association of Transgenders in Bengal, Ranjit Sinha on Monday said that they were concerned about the safety of women and transgenders in Kolkata after the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
Speaking to ANI, Sinha said "We are going through a troublesome situation in West Bengal, We are not in a good physical and mental condition. I have never thought that the transgender people in the country are different. There is no humanity left in humans, otherwise, such a situation would have never occurred."
Further, Sinha added that such situations should have occurred in the past in the country and not right now.
"This situation should have occurred in the country before and not right now. We are really glad that the West Bengal Governor called us on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and he gave us transgender people the assurance that we would not have to go through something like this again. A couple of days earlier, a transgender was raped," Sinha added.
Further continuing, Sinha said that the environment around them was not safe anymore, adding that the West Bengal CM despite being a woman has taken no proper action yet.
"The environment around us is not safe anymore. The West Bengal Chief Minister has taken no proper action yet. These actions should have been taken before. We have not been protected. This incident is very unfortunate. The political parties have just turned this into a political issue. They need to make sure both the transgender and women are protected with full security," Sinha said.
Additionally, Agnimitra Paul, BJP MLA said that no woman is safe in West Bengal anymore and now because of the TMC rule, the conditions have worsened.
"No woman is safe in West Bengal anymore. The TMC rule in the state has led to the conditions worsening more. There is no law and order in the state and no one does anything. TMC cannot always give the reason for CBI and keep the mouths of people shut. The parents of victims today said that the body of the girl was cremated without any prior information," she said.
Further, she said that they were happy that the Supreme Court had taken up the case and the girl and doctors would get justice.
Paul said "We are very happy that the Supreme Court has decided to take up the case. This will make sure that the girls and the doctors get their justice."
