Titagarh in alliance with ABB to strengthen railway propulsion business

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 17 : Engineering and fabrication major Titagarh Wagons Ltd said on Wednesday it has entered into an agreement with ABB to address the large and growing business of propulsion equipment for the Indian railway market.
Titagarh and ABB will work together to design, develop and manufacture three-phase insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based propulsion systems for electric multiple units (EMUs) and mainline electric multiple units (MEMUs).
These will be manufactured in Titagarh's plant at Uttarpara in with certain components being supplied by ABB. The agreement goes into effect immediately with the first units to be put into revenue service in less than two years.
Titagarh has manufactured and supplied more than 300 EMU/MEMU coaches to the Indian Railways and is now executing an order for design, manufacture and supply of 102 coaches for the Pune Metro ordered by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.
"The expansion into propulsion business is yet another endeavour towards the success of 'Make in India' and 'Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan' initiatives of the government," said Titagarh's Vice Chairman and Managing Director Umesh Chowdhary.
ABB India's Managing Director Sanjeev Sharma said the company's association with Indian Railways in its electrification initiative and the new partnership with Titagarh further strengthens its local presence in providing sustainable transportation.
