Trinamool Congress MP Nurul Islam from Basirhat passes away

North 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], September 25 : Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Basirhat in West Bengal, Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61.
Nurul Islam was battling cancer for a long time and died at his residence North 24 Parganas district after his health deteriorated this morning.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on social media on the demise of the MP .
"Sad to know of the demise of my valued colleague, our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He was a dedicated social worker in a remote Sundarban area, and he worked hard for the upliftment of poor people in a backward region. People of Basirhat will miss his leadership," Mamata Banerjee posted on X.
Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences to Nurul Islam's family, friends and colleagues.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev also extended condolences on X.
"I am extremely sorry to hear about out the passing away of Member of Parliament Haji Nurul Islam. My deepest condolences," Sushmita Dev said.
TMC MLA and actor Madan Mitra shared his grief on X while describing Islam as a 'great social worker.'
"I felt really very sad to know about the sad demise of my fellow and our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He is really a great social worker as he knows the flavour of the soil. May his soul rest in peace. My sincere condolences," Mitra said on X.
During the Lok Sabha Election 2024 Nurul Islam won the Basirhat seat with over 3 lakh votes, defeating BJP's Rekha Patra who led protests against TMC's Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkali.
Nurul Islam replaced the incumbent Nusrat Jahan in the 2024 election. He first became an MP from Basirhat seat in 2009. Later he contested from Jangipur constituency in 2014 but lost. He then returned to the state politics, winning twice from Haroa Assembly in 2016 and 2021.
