Tripura: CPI (M) decides to field former MLA Sudhan Das for Rajya Sabha vacant seat

Agartala (Tripura) [India], August 21 : Communist Party of India (Marxist), Tripura State Committee has decided to field former MLA Sudhan Das (64) to the Bye-Election of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) from Tripura, CPI (M) informed in a press statement.
In a press release, CPI (M) Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury said, "Communist Party of India (Marxist), Tripura State Committee has decided to field former MLA Sudhan Das (64) to the Bye-Election of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) from Tripura for which election is scheduled on the 3rd day of September 2024."
The press release further added that Das is six times MLA from Rajnagar (SC) Assembly Constituency, South Tripura.
"Das is one of the members of CPI(M), Tripura State Secretariat, a prominent Dalit leader, General Secretary of Tripura Tapashili Jati Samanyaya Samiti and was 6(six) times MLA from Rajnagar (SC) Assembly Constituency, South Tripura," the press release added.
Das will be up against Rajib Bhattacharjee, the BJP state president who was named the party candidate for the lone RS seat from the state. The seat fell vacant following the resignation of Biplab Kumar Deb, who contested from West Tripura Lok Sabha seat and secured a victory.
Earlier, the Election Commission announced September 3, as the date for Elections for 12 vacant seats in Rajya Sabha.
As per the ECI, the last date for making notification is August 21, and the scrutiny of nominations will be held on August 22.
The last date of withdrawal of candidatures for Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tripura is August 26 and for Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan Telangana and Odisha--August 27.
The polling will be held on September 3 from 9 am to 4 pm and counting of votes will be held on September 3 at 5 pm.
There are two vacant seats in Assam, two in Bihar, one in Haryana, one in MP, two in Maharashtra, one in Rajasthan, one in Tripura, one in Telangana and one in Odisha.
