Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 1 : A private security guard and a Special Police Officer (SPO) were assaulted by relatives of a patient on Friday night at the Gomati District Hospital in Tepania.
The situation occurred when 33-year-old Jahar Islam from the Dataram area was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state by his family.
The altercation reportedly began over inquiries regarding the location of the ECG and CT scan departments. According to the private security personnel, the initial verbal dispute turned physical with the assailants allegedly tearing the uniforms of the security staff during the scuffle. The chaos prompted the intervention of personnel from the R.K. Pur police station and TSR (Tripura State Rifles) soldiers.
Witnesses and security personnel claimed that a group of approximately 10 to 15 individuals were involved in the assault. The situation was further aggravated when the attackers issued threats in front of the police, boasting of their influence and connections as local representatives from Dataram. They accused the security staff of tarnishing the state government's reputation and loudly asserted their political affiliations to intimidate the authorities.
The police refrained from making any arrests, reportedly due to the attackers' persistent claims of belonging to the ruling party. The police eventually managed to calm the agitated crowd and dispersed both parties.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of hospital staff and the potential influence of political affiliations on law enforcement actions. The hospital administration and local authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The incident is under investigation as the community has called for stricter enforcement of laws to protect healthcare workers and ensure justice irrespective of political pressures.
