New Delhi [India], March 20 : Amid the bitter political slugfest between the ruling TMC and the BJP over the building collapse at Garden Reach in Kolkata, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday hit out at Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the primary civic body in the city over the loss of lives in the incident.
Notably, the TMC also holds the reins of the KMC presently, with party heavyweight Firhad Hakim as the mayor.
Taking to his official handle on X, the Bengal LoP posted, "The unpreparedness of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been exposed," he said.
"As a responsible Leader of the Opposition, I have initiated the process of data compilation regarding the process of sanctioning building plans, rejection of the same, issuing of completion certificates, identification and demolition of illegal buildings etc," the BJP MLA added.
He informed that he has filed an application under the RTI Act, adding, "This data would certainly help in assessing the risk posed by the illegal buildings which have been built without valid permission."
In an incident that put the city civic administration in the line of Opposition fire, a five-storey under-construction building collapsed in Kolkata's Garden Reach area late on March 17.
"The death toll in South Kolkata's Metiabruz building collapse incident has reached 4," Kolkata Police informed earlier.
West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose said 13 people were rescued from the site of the mishap.
