"We welcome verdict but victims' families are not happy": Congress MP on Periya double murder case

Ernakulam (Kerala) [India], January 3 : Congress MP from Ernakulam Hibi Eden on Friday hailed the CBI court's verdict in the Periya double murder case, which sentenced 10 accused to double life imprisonment while acknowledging the dissatisfaction of the victims' families.
The Congress MP told ANI, "Today was the most important verdict by the Ernakulam CBI court in the Periya double murder case where two youth Congress activists were murdered by CPIM and with the help of the government. We welcome the sentence where 10 of the main culprits have been given a double life sentence."
"We welcome the verdict but the family members of the deceased Youth Congress workers are not happy. We will discuss with the public prosecutors, advocates and the party about filing an appeal," he added.
Speaking on the case, Kerala Youth Congress President and Palakkad MP Rahul Mamkootathil said that a death sentence should have been given to the accused.
"I am not satisfied with the verdict. A death sentence should have been given," he said.
Earlier today, a special CBI court in Kerala's Ernakulam sentenced 10 accused out of 14 pledged guilty in the Periya double murder case to life imprisonment.
The court has also sentenced the former MLA and CPM leader K V Kunhiraman, to five years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in the murder.
This development is related to the murder of Congress youth workers Sarath Lal and Kripesh in Periya, Kasaragod, on February 17, 2019, allegedly by CPI (M) activists.
Earlier on December 28, the court had pleaded guilty to 14 accused involved in the case while acquitting the remaining 10.
